Seasonal color is the accent that keeps a landscape from looking static. On a commercial site or an HOA entry it signals that someone is paying attention. On a house it does more for the front elevation than almost anything else you could spend the same money on.
South Florida runs an inverted color calendar compared to the rest of the country. Our best annual color happens in the cool dry season, roughly October through April, when petunias, snapdragons, dianthus and geraniums thrive. Through the brutal wet summer the palette shifts to heat lovers — vinca, coleus, salvia, portulaca and torenia — that shrug off afternoon storms.

What you get with seasonal color
- Cool Season RotationPetunias, snapdragons, dianthus, geraniums and begonias for the October-to-April window when South Florida color is at its best.
- Warm Season RotationVinca, coleus, salvia, portulaca and torenia that hold up through summer heat, humidity and daily rain.
- Entry & Monument BedsThe high-visibility beds that set the impression of a whole community or commercial site.
- Bed Prep & AmendmentSoil refreshed and amended between rotations, because annuals in unimproved sand never perform.
- Container & Planter DisplaysPots and planters at entries, patios and pool decks planted and rotated with the beds.
- Scheduled RotationsA set rotation schedule so color is changed before the previous planting looks tired, not after.
How a rotation works
Clear the old planting
Spent annuals pulled out rather than cut back, so the bed starts clean.
Refresh the soil
Amendment worked in and grade re-leveled. This is why some color beds perform for years and others decline every rotation.
Plant to the design
Spacing and massing set for how the bed will look in three weeks, not on install day.
Mulch and water in
Light mulch layer, soaked in, and the irrigation checked for that zone.
Seasonal Color FAQs
When is the best flower season in South Florida?
The cool dry season, roughly October through April. That is when petunias, snapdragons, dianthus and geraniums — the annuals most people picture — actually thrive here. The rest of the country gets those in spring; we get them in winter.
What flowers survive a Florida summer?
Heat and rain lovers: vinca, coleus, salvia, portulaca, torenia and melampodium. They tolerate the humidity and the daily afternoon downpours that rot cool-season annuals within weeks.
How often should color be rotated?
Most commercial properties and HOA entries rotate two to four times a year. Residential clients often do two — a cool season planting and a warm season planting.
Why do my annuals die so fast?
Usually the soil, not the plants. Annuals are heavy feeders with shallow roots, and unimproved South Florida sand holds almost no water or nutrients. Amending the bed at every rotation is the difference between a display that lasts the season and one that fades in six weeks.

Mulch & Flower Bed Maintenance
A fresh 2 to 3 inch layer of mulch inhibits weeds, holds moisture in sandy soil, moderates root-zone temperature and makes the entire property look finished.
