Hardscapes, Pavers & Patios

In the art of landscaping, hardscape means the built environment: the patios, walls, walkways and fire features that give a yard its shape when the plants are still filling in.

Hardscape is the counterpart to the softscape — the grown aspects of a landscape like plants, vegetation, flowers and trees. It can be large scale or small, and nearly every landscape incorporates some form of it. A flagstone path to a side gate is hardscape. So is a 900-square-foot travertine pool deck.

What hardscape does better than anything else is create outdoor rooms. A paver patio with a seat wall and a fire pit turns an empty stretch of St. Augustine into the place everyone actually sits. And in South Florida, where the weather cooperates ten months a year, that space earns its cost back in use.

Our process

How we build a paver installation

  1. Layout and excavation

The area is marked, then excavated deep enough for a real base — not just enough to drop pavers on grade.

  2. Base and compaction

Crushed base material placed in lifts and compacted. This step is where cheap installations fail, and it is invisible once the job is done.

  3. Bedding and setting

Screeded sand bedding, pavers set to pattern, then cut to the edges.

  4. Edge restraint and joint sand

Edge restraint locks the perimeter, polymeric joint sand locks the field, and a final compaction seats everything together.

Questions

Hardscapes FAQs

What is the difference between hardscape and softscape?

Hardscape is the built environment of a landscape design — patios, walls, walkways, fire pits, fountains and outdoor kitchens. Softscape is the grown material: plants, vegetation, flowers and trees. Most landscapes need both, and the balance between them is most of what makes a yard feel designed.

How long does a paver patio last in Florida?

A properly based paver installation lasts decades. Individual pavers can be lifted and reset if a tree root or a settled spot needs attention, which is a real advantage over poured concrete — you repair a section instead of replacing a slab.

Do pavers get too hot for bare feet around a pool?

It depends on the material. Travertine and light-colored concrete pavers stay noticeably cooler than dark pavers or standard concrete, which is why they dominate pool deck installations in South Florida.

Do I need a permit for a paver patio?

It depends on the municipality, the size, and whether the work changes drainage or sits inside a setback. Palm Beach County and its cities all handle this differently. We will tell you what your specific project needs before we start.

Can you build over my existing concrete?

Sometimes. If the slab is sound and the resulting height still works against door thresholds and pool coping, an overlay is a good option. If the slab is cracked or the elevation does not work, tearing it out produces a better result.
